Husband and wife, George Hillberry and Carla Rodríguez were spending a Sunday afternoon driving through wine country roads in November 2010 when they stopped by Beacon Hill to pick up equipment they purchased from the prior owner. After a few friendly exchanges, Carla was able to connect with him given her time spent in his homeland of Romania, where she served as a Peace Corps Volunteer. George and Carla immediately fell in love with the property and realized the tremendous care and love that had been placed on the site. Six months later, in April 2011 George and Carla were official owners of Beacon Hill Winery & Vineyard. The property totals 44 acres of which 22 are planted including Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling and Gewürztraminer. Beacon Hill was first established in the late 1990s by renowned wine maker Tony Soter, of Soter Vineyards.
George Hillberry, Wine Grower, Owner
A 17-year veteran of the Oregon wine industry, George was born in Berkley, CA and spent his formative years in Brazil and Spain. Throughout his family’s extensive time abroad, they always returned to Oregon. George made his way back to the US to attend Valley Forge Military Academy in Pennsylvania where upon graduation he decided to follow sunnier skies and attended the University of Southern California, earning a degree in Business and subsequently received an MBA from Baldwin-Wallace University. In 2000, George made the permanent move to the one place he always called home, Oregon. Drawing from his farming heritage, George started Vines to Wines Services, LLC, a vineyard management company and took over farming for Chehalem Mountain Vineyard and La Colina Vineyard. With Vines to Wines Services gaining additional clients and a budding desire to expand his knowledge beyond the vineyards, George co-founded Union Wine Co. in 2005 gaining deep insight into winery operations and sales distribution. In 2010, George and his wife Carla sold their interest in Union Wine Co. and purchased Beacon Hill Winery & Vineyard, a natural progression to their portfolio. George is in charge of vineyard and winery operations and is happiest outside, be it on a tractor, walking the vineyards, or planting garlic by the barn.
Carla Rodriguez, Estate Manager, Owner
After 10 years in Oregon, Carla has finally made peace with the rain. Carla was born and raised in the sunny skies of Northern México and moved to Texas to earn her undergraduate degree in Finance. In 2001, she joined the Peace Corps and spent 2 years in Constanta, on the Black Sea coast of Romania as an Environmental volunteer. After completing her 2 year service, she spent 6 months traveling the world with one small backpack and two great friends. She returned to the US and earned an MBA in International Business from Thunderbird in 2006 and subsequently accepted a job offer with a high tech company that landed her in Portland. Her plans of a short stay in the Pacific Northwest did not play out after meeting George and falling in love with the landscape, the food, the wines of the Willamette Valley and yes George too! Carla continues to work full time in Finance and manages all aspects of the tasting room, private events, and the vacation rentals within the Beacon Hill property.
